Fort Leonard Wood or Fort Lost in the Woods as most people refer to it.

I guess if you are into rural living, this is paradise. Shopping is scarce unless you are willing to do some major driving. If you have kids, the post has lots of stuff for them to do but if you don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t, you are going to be bored. There are one or two activities each month for adults but that is it. There is bingo if you are into that. Normally I am a huge nature lover but hiking in the woods here is a whole different ball game. They are infested with ticks. Just every where! There is boating, fishing, camping and horse back riding but not much else unless you want to learn how to cave.

Plan on spending weekends driving to St. Louis or Kansas City if you want any type of decent shopping. The nearest mall is 90 minutes away in Springfield and the best it has is Macy?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s. The outlets are ok but not great. You can find those and other retail outlets at Osage Beach about an hour north. The local communities are small and have the small town mentality. Everything closes early so be prepared to find everything you need during banking hours. If you are lucky, a few business stay open until 7 pm and may be open on Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.

The weather here is fairly typical of the Midwest. 4 seasons, with it getting really hot and humid in the summer and freezing in the winter. I can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t tell you it is great here but I can tell you there have been many days that I have to remind myself it could be much worse.

I would like to introduce to you Nadine Albrecht. Nadine was kind enough to guest blog on my blog.
She is currently a stay-at-home mom who isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t often found at home. She is an Army Veteran who served in the Idaho Army National Guard, Active Army and Army Reserves before hanging up the dog tags to focus on her family. You can often find her in the kitchen whipping up some yummy goodness to feed her growing boys.
She is a volunteer warrior, though currently scaling back after our latest move. She volunteers with Army Family Team Building and both the Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack. Since all that is NOT enough she also has a successful blog ?¢‚Ǩ?ìThe Albrecht Squad?¢‚Ǩ¬ù . Read also what she is thankful for this holiday season.

?¢‚Ǩ?ìBeing happy doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t mean that everything is perfect. It means that you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve decided to look beyond the imperfections.?¢‚Ǩ¬ù

Hello from beautiful Fort Leonard Wood, MO! Yes, I said Fort Leonard Wood. You might know it as ?¢‚Ǩ?ìFort Lost in the Wood?¢‚Ǩ¬ù or you may have grimaced or even said yuck when you read that first sentence. It wouldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t be the first time I received that reaction and I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m sure it won?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t be the last. Being an Army family we are often sent to places that are deemed less than desirable. I know that FLW is one of those places that people try to avoid. When my husband called me from Iraq to tell me that he was on orders to FLW, I was ecstatic! No, really I was. Yes, I had heard all the ?¢‚Ǩ?ìbad?¢‚Ǩ¬ù things from people about this place. But to be truthful, they really weren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t all that bad and most of the people who shared those opinions had never even been here. They were going off of the stereotype of this installation. There were a few who had been here and shared their disgust with me about their time here. Well I have to say I didn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t enjoy Fort Jackson, SC much either while I was at basic training and the closest I got to nature was when my face was staring at the dirt while I was being smoked. I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t think it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s fair to judge an entire community because of your limited experience to it while attending basic training.

I bring this up because I recently had the opportunity to attend some Army training and I was surrounded by hundreds of other Army wives. They came from all over. We had name tags that identified which duty station we were from. People would see our installation and the smirks, the scoffs and the insults would come. Repeatedly I told them that we loved it here and that I truly believed t hat FLW was one of the Army?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s best kept secrets. People were shocked by that response but it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s true. And let me tell you why I believe that?¢‚Ǩ¬¶it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s about perspective.

Over my 14 years of marriage to my Soldier, we have lived in some places many avoid at all costs. South Korea, Fort Knox, and Fort Riley just to name a few. We heard negative and continue to hear negative things about those duty stations. But you know, we loved each one for different reasons. And the main reason we could learn to love these places was perspective. For our family, we try to focus on the positive and not the negative. Most people don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t like FLW because it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s in the middle of nowhere. Well it really isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t, we aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t out in the middle of the boondocks. We have an amazing community that supports the Military. No, we don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have a mall and don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have many big name restaurants or stores but really if that is what you need to make you happy well I would seriously consider taking a step back and reevaluating life.

We have four beautiful seasons here and while I could do without the humidity in the summer I can live with it, we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve lived in other places with humidity or really high heat. As far as my husband goes, he can handle a summer in Missouri over another summer in Iraq. One of the bonuses of being here at FLW is that my husband is not currently on a deployment cycle. If we were somewhere else he would have been gone again. Here we get a two year break and for that I am grateful. We recently completed our first year of living together consecutively in over a decade and we were able to do that because of where we live. We have enjoyed trips to some of the most beautiful places in the U.S., right here in MO. My husband has been able to watch his kids in all their various activities and most of all we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve just been able to be together as a family. We have no material distractions; we cook in our kitchen and enjoy meals around our own dining room table. We take long drives and enjoy the beauty of the woods.

As many of my Military family friends know, there are many places that we would rather not end up, but if you do, try to keep it all in perspective. If you can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t find something positive about the area itself, I challenge you to look at how your family can benefit from being where you are.

-Nadine Albrecht

We have/will be there for the next 3+ years. We?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been there for 1 year so far?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ My husband is a Combat Engineer in the Army. There is alot to do on post- bowling, movie theatre, site-seeing, amazing river to tube/canoe down, very nice px that has almost everytihng you need, STARBUCKS!, and right off post, there is a TON of stuff- restaurants, shopping, hotels. If you drive 45 minutes to Osage Beach, there is so much to do; an amazing outlet mall, Target, tons of restaurants, movie theatres, lake to swim/hike.

The area is beautiful and if you like rural activities (ATV rodeo, anyone?), you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re in luck. There is hiking, fishing, hunting and camping galore. What there ISN?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢T is shopping. If you want anything not carried at Walmart, you are out of luck unless you are willing to drive an hour or more. The activities on post are not bad, but not awe-inspiring. Check out their MWR website for current specifics.

FLW is often referred to as ?¢‚Ǩ?ìFort Lost in the Woods?¢‚Ǩ¬ù but your experience there can still be good. FLW MWR has an endless amount of events on post?¢‚Ǩ¬¶take advantage of them. My son enjoyed all the holiday events and especially the kid?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s fishing derbies. If you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re looking for something to do off post, you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll probably have to travel to Rolla to the skating rink or to Springfield which has an array of activities for children such as Chuck E. Cheese, a mall, zoo, etc. St. Louis is just a 2 hour drive and has the arch, zoo, mall and many more activities to choose from. If you are an outdoor person, this is the place for you. Fishing, camping, hunting and hiking are at your fingertips. Your best bet is to go to LORA (Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area) ran by MWR. They have all these available and at great prices for military and families. Enjoy your time in Missouri.
